The hard part of starting Pokemon TCG in Australia is not finding cards. It is knowing what else to buy so the cards you open stay in good shape, and so you can actually play with them. Most people spend on packs first and discover three weeks later that their best pull has a bent corner. This starter pack is built the other way around: the small protective purchases come first, because they cost a few dollars now and save you hundreds in condition-based value later.

Below is the full kit in the order we would buy it, with a short reason for each item and a rough sense of who needs it. If you only want the cheapest sensible start, skip to the minimum kit.

Step 1: Pick your sealed product

An Elite Trainer Box is still the best single purchase for a beginner. It bundles booster packs with sleeves, dice, damage counters, condition markers, a player's guide and a promo card, so one box covers the "first night" needs of a new player. If you are not sure whether to buy an ETB, a booster bundle or a full box, our ETB vs booster box vs booster bundle comparison breaks down the cost per pack.

The newest generation of the game. Pick this if you want to play the current format and open cards from the set everyone is talking about.

A newer Mega Evolutions release to pair with the main set above. A good pick if you want to open from more than one set, or if Perfect Order's cards are the ones you are chasing.

Sealed prices move week to week. Before you pay Amazon's price, compare it against the live Australian market on our ETB deals page, and set up stock alerts if the box you want keeps selling out.

Step 2: Protect every card you open

Condition drives price. A card that goes from near mint to lightly played can lose a large share of its value, and most of that damage happens in the first week, in a pocket or on a table, not in a binder. Sleeving is the cheapest insurance in the hobby.

Standard card sleeves#ad #sponsored

Buy these before your first pack. Every card you plan to keep, and every card in a deck, goes into a sleeve. A multi-pack means you can sleeve a full box without running out halfway through. Our sleeve guide covers which finishes shuffle best.

Toploaders#ad #sponsored

When a pull is worth more than a few dollars, slide it into a sleeve and then a rigid toploader. This is also how you ship a card safely if you sell it later. See how to use toploaders properly to avoid scratching the card on the way in.

Step 3: Somewhere to put everything

If you are going to play at a local store or a league night, a padded deck box with dividers keeps sleeved decks together and stops the edges from rubbing in a bag.

For the bulk of a collection: pages of pockets you can flip through and show a friend. Use a binder with polypropylene pages and avoid cheap ring binders that can leave dents on card edges. More detail in our binder buying guide.

If you start collecting singles seriously, a binder that holds toploaders lets you keep your best cards rigid and still browse them.

Step 4: The play kit

If the person you are buying for wants to play rather than collect, a packaged deck and accessory set removes the hardest part of starting: building a legal deck from scratch. For a cheaper way to build, see the best budget Pokemon TCG decks.

Playmat#ad #sponsored

A neoprene mat gives cards a soft, clean surface, which means fewer edge scuffs and a tidy zone layout for new players learning where everything goes.

Step 5 (optional): A display piece

Once you have a favourite card, a graded slab on a stand is the point where the hobby starts looking like a hobby. You do not need to grade anything to display it; a case and a single graded card is enough to anchor a shelf.

Treat this as a collection anchor, not an investment. If you are considering grading your own cards instead, work through our PSA grading cost breakdown first so the fees do not surprise you.

That is the whole list. Everything else can wait until you know whether you are a player, a set collector or a card hunter.

Starter pack FAQ

What should I buy first as a new Pokemon TCG player in Australia?

An Elite Trainer Box and a pack of sleeves. The ETB includes most of the gameplay accessories, and sleeves protect everything you open from the first pack.

Do I need toploaders for every card?

No. Sleeve everything, and only move cards into toploaders when they are worth protecting more heavily, typically anything you would be upset to see bent.

Is Amazon Australia a good place to buy Pokemon cards?

It is convenient for accessories and often competitive for sealed product, but stock and sellers vary. Read our guide to buying Pokemon cards on Amazon Australia to make sure you are buying from Amazon itself or a reputable seller, and compare against retailer stock on our retailers page.

Should I buy singles instead of packs?

If you want one particular card, yes. Packs are for the fun of opening. Check what that card actually sells for on the CardTracker market tracker before you buy.
