Every major card grading company, PSA, CGC, Beckett, TAG, is based in the United States. For an Australian collector, that is not a minor detail. It means every card you submit leaves the country, comes back as an import, and spends months in transit on top of the grader's own queue. Ark Grading is the alternative: a Melbourne-based grading service where your card never leaves Australia.
Here is what Ark actually is, what it costs, how long it takes, and how CardTracker readers get 5% off a submission.
What Is Ark Grading?
Ark Grading is operated by Ark Forensic and Grading, headquartered at Level 3, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000. It is an Australian-owned and operated card authentication and grading service covering Pokemon, other TCGs, and sports cards.
Ark leans on its forensic framing: submissions are assessed under 450x magnification cameras with five separate light sources, with near-UV lighting and x-ray fluorescence used for authentication, backed up by digital microscopes for detail inspection. Ark describes its graders as university-qualified scientists trained against global grading standards, a different hiring pitch to the sports-memorabilia-authenticator background most legacy graders lean on.
Why Grading Locally Actually Matters
The case for Ark is not really about forensic cameras. It is about geography. Sending a card to PSA, CGC, Beckett, or TAG from Australia means:
- International shipping, both ways. Weeks of transit before the grading clock even starts, and weeks again on the way home.
- A USD list price that is not the real price. Currency conversion, plus whatever an Australian submission service charges to handle the logistics, routinely turns a $59.99 USD PSA tier into $110 to $130 AUD before a card is graded.
- A possible GST and duty exposure on the way back in. The card left as your property and returns as an import; depending on declared value, that return leg can attract GST and duty on top of the shipping and insurance you already paid for.
Ark removes all three. A card submitted to Ark travels domestically, in Australia Post or courier tracked parcels, is priced in AUD with no conversion, and never crosses a border, so there is no import exposure on the way back. The turnaround Ark quotes is close to the real, total wait, not just the grading-floor portion of a much longer international round trip.
Ark's Grading Scale and Subgrades
Ark grades on a 1 to 10 scale in half-point increments across four categories, Centering, Surface, Edges, and Corners, the same subgrade structure Beckett popularised. Where Ark differs is a stricter rule: the overall grade is capped at a maximum of 0.5 above the lowest individual subgrade. A card with a perfect Centering, Surface, and Edges score but a Corners subgrade of 8.5 cannot come back as anything higher than a 9. That rule is designed to kill the "weak 10" versus "strong 10" argument that comes up constantly around PSA's single whole-number grade, by making the subgrades themselves do the explaining.
Ark Grading Pricing and Turnaround
Ark's current published tiers, at the time of writing, are:
| Service | Price Per Card (AUD) | Standard Rate | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | $23.00 | $29.95 | 65 days |
| Premium | $34.95 | $49.95 | 25 days |
| Express | $49.95 | $74.95 | 10 days |
| Authentic Assessment (no grade, authenticity only) | $15.00 | — | 21 days |
| Custom Cards | $15.00 | — | 14 days |
| Re-Encapsulation (Ark-graded cards only) | $12.50 | — | 14 days |
All tiers include subgrades, the sonic-sealed case, and the security label described below. Every one of those turnaround figures is close to the full, real-world wait for an Australian submitter, because there is no international leg stacked on top. Compare that to PSA's own Standard tier: $59.99 USD, 90 to 100 business days of grading alone, before you add the shipping and intake time either side, which is the gap CardTracker's PSA grading cost in Australia breakdown covers in full.
Pricing and promotions on grading services move. Treat the table above as a starting point and confirm current rates directly on Ark's services page before you submit.
How Submission Works
Ark runs an online submission form with saved progress, so you can fill out your order over more than one sitting. Once submitted, you post your cards to Ark's secure PO box at Level 3, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000, and upload your tracking number to your Ark dashboard so your order can be matched to the parcel the moment it arrives. From there you can track status online rather than waiting on an unexplained silence, and graded cards are returned via express, tracked, signature-required, fully insured shipping.

Ark's slabs use a dark, contrasting label design with a 3D laser-forged hologram security seal, a scannable QR code, and an embedded NFC chip rated for 100,000 scans, so a grade can be verified with a phone tap as well as a certification lookup. The case itself is custom acrylic that Ark markets as the clearest available and more than 50% heavier than the most widely used case on the market, a pointed comparison to the thinner cases PSA and CGC use.
Ark vs PSA, CGC, Beckett, and TAG for Australian Collectors
| Grader | Based | Entry tier | Realistic total wait from Australia |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | USA | $59.99 USD (~$110-130 AUD via a local submission service) | 5-6+ months |
| CGC | USA | $17-20 USD Bulk/Economy | 4-6+ months |
| Beckett (BGS) | USA | $14.95 USD Base | 4-5+ months |
| TAG | USA | $39.95 USD Base (tiers currently limited) | 3-5+ months |
| Ark Grading | Melbourne, Australia | $23.00 AUD Economy | ~65 days, no overseas leg |
None of this means PSA is a bad grader. It still carries the strongest resale brand recognition in the hobby, and for a genuinely high-value chase card, the PSA premium on resale can still outweigh the extra cost and wait. For the large majority of submissions, modern chase pulls, vintage holos, bulk lots, and anything you want graded without a five-month round trip, Ark is the more practical Australian default. If you want the full cost and timeline breakdown on the US graders first, see CardTracker's PSA, CGC, Beckett and TAG grading guide for Australians, or the broader best ways to grade TCG cards in Australia overview.
The CardTracker Reader Discount: 5% Off with Code CARDTRACKER
CardTracker readers get 5% off any Ark Grading submission. Head to arkgrading.com.au, start your submission, and enter code CARDTRACKER at checkout to apply the discount.
The code is entered manually in the coupon field during checkout on Ark's site, it is not automatic, so do not skip that step. It is CardTracker's way of saying thanks for reading this far: on a $49.95 Express submission that is only a couple of dollars back, but on a batch of cards sent through Premium or Economy, it adds up fast. Before you submit, check the current market price for both the raw and graded version of your card, so you know the grading fee, even discounted, is actually worth paying.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ark Grading legit?
Ark Grading is operated by Ark Forensic and Grading, an Australian-owned company based in Melbourne. It authenticates cards before grading them, uses tamper-evident sonic-sealed cases, and backs every slab with a verifiable certification number plus an NFC chip and QR code on the label.
Is Ark Grading cheaper than PSA for Australians?
At the entry tier, yes, Ark's Economy service is $23 AUD against a real Australian cost of roughly $110 to $130 AUD to submit to PSA through a local service, once shipping, currency conversion, and import handling are added. See CardTracker's PSA grading cost in Australia breakdown for the full PSA figure.
How long does Ark Grading take?
Ark's published turnarounds are 65 days for Economy, 25 days for Premium, and 10 days for Express. Because submissions stay within Australia, those figures are close to the real, total wait, rather than just the grading portion of a much longer international round trip. Confirm current turnaround on Ark's services page before submitting, as it can change with demand.
How do I get the 5% discount?
Start a submission at arkgrading.com.au and enter the code CARDTRACKER in the coupon field at checkout. It is applied manually, it does not happen automatically.
Does Ark Grading accept Japanese and other non-English cards?
Ark accepts most TCGs and sports cards of standard card size and thickness, including Pokemon TCG in all languages, without the extra Hong Kong routing step that adds one to two months to a PSA submission of a Japanese card.
Should I use Ark or PSA for my most valuable card?
For a single card where maximum resale brand premium matters more than cost or turnaround, PSA still carries the strongest market recognition. For everything else, modern chase cards, vintage holos you are not planning to flip at the top of the market, and any bulk submission, Ark's combination of local turnaround and AUD pricing is hard to beat.
