The Pokemon 30th Anniversary is not one launch. It is five waves spread across two and a half months, and the three products Australian collectors want most (the Elite Trainer Box, Ultra Premium Collection, and Ditto Premium Collection) are split across two of them.

The ETB arrives with Wave 1 on September 16. The UPC and Ditto Collection do not arrive until November 6. If you are planning your spend across all three, or trying to figure out which retailers to watch for which product, here is how each one breaks down.

The ETB lands in Wave 1 alongside other products. The UPC and Ditto Collection are both Wave 4, nearly two months later. This matters because collectors who show up at a store on September 16 looking for the UPC will leave empty-handed, and collectors who wait until November assuming the ETB will still be on shelves are going to find bare pegs.

Where to Buy the ETB in Australia (Wave 1, September 16)

Wave 1 launches on September 16, and demand is expected to be about as high as anything we have seen. Every pre-order that opened across every retailer, big and small, either crashed the site or sold out almost instantly.

Here is the retailer-by-retailer breakdown.

Kmart

In-store only, no reservation system. Pre-orders are not available. The advantage: some Kmart locations run 24-hour or midnight trading, allowing sales at the stroke of midnight. If you have a 24-hour or midnight-trading Kmart nearby, that is realistically your earliest shot at physical stock in the country. Check the Kmart store locator the night before.

Big W

Online pre-orders for Big W are already sold out. An image circulating suggests ETBs and ex Boxes may not be available in-store this time, pointing to another online pre-order wave for those two products specifically. Watch for that wave if you missed the first one.

Target

Target is currently the only major AU retailer that has not released online pre-orders for the 30th Anniversary. Pre-orders are expected to drop on or before the 16th. If you are reading this and they have gone live, move fast.

Toymate

Toymate usually has good in-store stock levels and sets reasonable purchase limits to share stock around. For release-day walk-ins, Toymate stores are one of the more reliable options.

EB Games

EB Games pre-orders are sold out. They originally listed at inflated pricing versus RRP, though pricing was revised downward before selling out. Pre-orders required an EB World Plus membership. They are hosting a midnight launch for Wave 1 and offering a free Pikachu promo card with purchase. Stock is expected to be extremely limited, with some products restricted to invite-only access.

JB Hi-Fi

Pre-orders have been rocky: listed, pulled for technical issues, then relisted. Expect JB Hi-Fi to sell primarily online with limited walk-in stock.

Pokemon Center AU

Pokemon Center AU has not released Australian online pre-orders for the 30th Anniversary. There is no guarantee they will, but the Pokemon Center-exclusive ETBs (which include two extra booster packs and a unique promo) will be highly sought after.

The Regional Store Advantage

Most stores simply will not have enough for everyone who lines up. The main exception: quieter regional stores, where the queue-to-stock ratio works a lot more in your favour. If you can get to a store outside a major metro area, the odds improve meaningfully.

Walking into a store around lunchtime on release day is realistically not viable for securing Wave 1 stock.

Where to Buy the UPC in Australia (Wave 4, November 6)

The Ultra Premium Collection lands on November 6, after the ETB. Expected AU RRP is around $360.

Big W and Kmart have not released pre-orders for the Ultra Premium Collection. Given how every ETB pre-order either crashed sites or sold out instantly, expect UPC demand to be equal or greater. The UPC is a premium product with a higher price ceiling, and scalper interest tends to concentrate on these.

Your best options right now for UPC pre-orders are specialty retailers. Collectors Lane and Mind Games both carry 30th Celebration products for Australian collectors. Check their sites for UPC listings.

When Big W and Kmart do open pre-orders for Wave 4 products, set up restock alerts so you catch the window before it closes.

Where to Buy the Ditto Premium Collection in Australia (Wave 4, November 6)

The Ditto Premium Collection releases alongside the UPC on November 6. Expected AU RRP is around $80.

Pre-orders are confirmed at two specialty retailers, though both are pricing well above the expected RRP:

• Collectors Lane has the Ditto Premium Collection listed as a pre-order with a November 6 release date. Pre-order price is $198.00, well above expected RRP.
• Mind Games is also stocking the Ditto Premium Collection at a pre-order price of $159.00, also well above the expected $80 RRP.

At around $80 RRP, the Ditto Collection is the most accessible of the three headline products. It gives you eight packs (compared to nine in the ETB) plus the display piece and foil set. For collectors on a budget, or those who want to spread their money across multiple products, this is the lowest entry point.
