Pokemon Card Theft: Why the Cards Are a Target and What the Numbers Show

Pokemon card theft has become a pattern on both sides of the Atlantic, and the recent cases show what it looks like. The owner of Celestial Collectables in Warrington, England, describes thieves pulling up outside his shop in a transit van, lifting the security cameras out of the way with brushes and knocking the glass panel through. It was over in about four minutes, and he puts the missing Pokemon stock at £60,000. Retailers in Bournemouth, Gloucester and Peterborough were hit around the same time, with reported losses of £30,000, £25,000 and about £80,000, and Wiltshire Police reported a burglary at a Trowbridge shop in which a substantial amount of Pokemon cards was taken. Nottinghamshire alone logged four high-profile incidents in a matter of weeks, one of them thieves smashing through a brick wall to reach Pokemon cards worth an estimated £10,000 in a warehouse.
The United States has its own run. Police in Anaheim spent February 2026 looking for four suspects who broke into an insurance office, tunneled their way into a collectible shop and left with US$180,000 in Pokemon cards. A North Carolina man is now serving more than ten years for pepper-spraying and tying up a game store employee and making off with US$21,000 in cards and cash. A traffic stop five days later ended it, and he had written the word "payday" on the calendar date of the robbery. In Bellingham, Washington, a man took more than US$20,000 in Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering cards from a shop, then came back a month later to try selling some of it back to the same store. Texas logged a string of its own: more than US$55,000 in sealed Prismatic Evolutions boxes taken from a home in Spring while the owner was away, an estimated US$30,000 from R.E.V. Collectibles in Cypress on the shop's second break-in of 2025, an estimated US$100,000 in rare cards and cash from a Killeen shop, and a grand jury indictment in Amarillo over roughly US$30,000 of cards. And the target is not always a shop: a father and son vending at a hobby showcase were robbed in the car park while packing up, losing US$150,000 in cards and US$12,000 in cash.
This guide stays on the thefts themselves and what makes the cards a target; it does not cover how to protect a collection or ship one safely.

The explanation the trade gives is a combination, not a single factor. The Certified Trading Card Association, a US industry body, has reported a "large rise" in thefts targeting American card stores. Its chief executive Nick Jarman points to what makes the cards attractive: they have become "high value" and "highly liquid", and they are "really hard" to trace once they move onto secondary markets. Emmeline Taylor, a criminologist at City St George's, University of London, has named the people behind the pattern "shoplifting entrepreneurs". They are not the individuals you would expect to steal, but ones who know the product well enough to sell it into the right market "almost immediately", and who pick items they can take in bulk "relatively easily" and sell on for profit.
The values behind that are not small. Logan Paul's auction of an ultra-rare Pikachu card set a record at £12 million, and a single sale by one specialist auction house saw more than £1.5 million in "Pokémon assets" change hands. Roy Raftery, who has brokered more than £2 million of Pokemon sales including an £832,000 Pikachu Illustrator, put the thief's arithmetic to the BBC: "Thieves know Pokémon is lucrative, they just know Pokémon is worth taking now. And they think it's an easier target than robbing a bank or robbing a jewellery shop."
The check worth making before you pay
For an Australian buyer, the useful part of all this sits at the checkout rather than the doorway. Our Market prices pages calculate a genuine Australian market price for singles and sealed product from local sold and active listing data rather than a converted US figure, and each set page carries per-card pricing, recent movement and the cheapest live listings. Our eBay deals feed scans continuously for singles and sealed product listed below Australian market value, with every listing showing the total price including shipping next to the estimated market price, so the saving is visible before you click. The asking price is the seller's number; the market value is the one to hold it against.
How CardTracker helps Australian buyers
CardTracker monitors Australian retailers and eBay Australia around the clock for trading card stock, restocks and price drops, and calculates a genuine Australian market price for singles and sealed product rather than converting a US figure. Free alerts go out on Discord, Telegram and WhatsApp the moment a tracked retailer changes stock or price, each with a direct link to the listing. The restock alerts, market prices and deal tracking are all free to use, and a paid Premium community adds faster and more finely filtered alerts.
Before you pay what any listing asks, check the Australian market price for the set you are buying first.
