Pokemon 30th Anniversary Singles: When to Buy in Australia

A card tipped to sell for $3,000 now trades at $100, and the people who camped stores for it are the ones losing. That is where Pokemon's 30th Celebration sits a week after its September 16 launch. For Australian collectors the real question is which tiers have already bottomed and which still have further to fall before you buy.

The answer splits by rarity. Special Illustration Rares and Illustration Rares have already done most of their dropping. Classic Collection and RGB cards have not, and will not until the final product wave lands by December 4.

The Crash in Numbers

Future Mew and Future Mewtwo were tipped to sell for $3,000 each before launch. They now struggle to reach $100. The Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rare, Night variant, peaked at $1,250 and sells for $120 today, a tenfold drop.

The top of the set looks nothing like the last two years. Outside the ultra-rare RGB Mews, the most expensive card in 30th Celebration is the Special Illustration Rare Mew ex, illustrated by Kuroimori, at a $177 market price. The Gengar ex SIR is second at $130. By tenth place, prices fall under $40. A $177 ceiling for the top Special Illustration Rare in a marquee anniversary set is historically cheap, and the tenfold Pikachu fall shows the direction of travel.

Why Pull Rates Broke the Scalper Play

Prices fell because the hits are easy to pull. In recent Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets, Special Illustration Rares appeared in roughly one in 80 packs. In 30th Celebration, that rate jumped to one in 18 to one in 20. Illustration Rares show up in one in five packs, double their usual frequency.

A 6,500-pack sample lays out the full odds. Typical ex cards arrive at least once in four packs. Illustration Rares at one in five, Classic Collection at one in ten, Special Illustration Rares at one in twenty. The genuinely scarce pulls are Futuristic Rares at one in 117 packs, and the RGB cards at one in 3,200.

The second force is supply. This is the largest print run of any Pokemon set, and it keeps printing for months. Not only are the hits easy to pull, more product keeps arriving. Scalpers bought expecting scarcity and got the opposite.

When to Buy in Australia: Three Windows

The set launched September 16 and rolls out 14 products across four waves, ending December 4. Each wave adds supply, so the buying moment depends on the tier.

Right now, for Special Illustration Rares and Illustration Rares. These already crashed hardest. The Mew ex SIR is listed around $119, and the two Pikachu ex SIRs have been seen around $99 and $109 on market trackers. The bulk of the drop has happened, so waiting into November saves little on sub-$120 cards. Buy the SIRs you want now.

Through the middle waves, for the lower-tier bulk. The set keeps printing for months, which means more packs keep opening and cheap singles keep sliding. A Gengar ex at $5 or a stack of common Illustration Rares is not urgent. Let the supply keep arriving.

Late November to December 4, for Classic Collection and RGB. The Classic Collection cards come one in ten packs and the RGB cards one in 3,200. The RGB Mew's first known sale was $20,000, and its floor is now around $4,000. The final wave lands at the end of the calendar, and that is when the last big supply of these top tiers hits. What About the $1 Million Pokemon Card?

No card in 30th Celebration is worth a million dollars. The seven-figure Pokemon cards are decades-old vintage rarities. Logan Paul's PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator sold for $16,492,000 in February 2026, the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction. A Gold Star Rayquaza from the EX Deoxys set is reported to have become the first English-language Pokemon card to pass seven figures.

The 30th set's answer to those is the RGB Mew, and early sales were reportedly far higher than its current trading level around $4,000. That is a different universe from a card with a single-digit population. No card in a set with a one-in-five Illustration Rare rate and a one-in-3,200 RGB rate will behave like a vintage grail.

Sealed vs Singles: What to Buy Now

Sealed and singles have split in opposite directions. The Elite Trainer Box is $100 at Big W and JB Hi-Fi, at RRP. EB Games originally listed that same ETB at $199, a 99% markup, before public backlash forced a revision.

For completionists, singles win. The crash already happened: the top SIR was recently listed around $177, most SIRs have been seen under $120, and by tenth place numbers are far lower. Sealed still has four waves to come and months of printing, which pushes card prices down, not up. If you want the cards to own and display, buy at the floor now.

Sealed only makes sense for the rarest tiers, and even there cracking packs is a lottery. Classic Collection at one in ten and RGB at one in 3,200 mean buying the single is almost always cheaper.
