If you are working out how to ship Pokemon cards Australia-wide, the packaging below takes the luck out of it: four layers, built in a set order. Post a card with nothing but a plain envelope around it, and its condition on arrival is up to the trip. The last part of this guide prices the postage at Australia Post's letter rates.
The packaging, step by step
Work through the layers in this order.
- Slip the card into a penny sleeve; Dragon Shield sleeves work as well.
- Slide the sleeved card into a toploader, the rigid sleeve that adds a layer of protection and holds the card steady.
- Seal the opening of the toploader with painter's tape so the card cannot slide out in transit. Painter's tape is the choice because it leaves no residue; other types of tape are the ones to avoid.
- Cut two pieces of cardboard to the size of the toploader. A cereal or cracker box supplies it, with the toploader as the measuring guide.
- Sandwich the card between the two pieces. That supports the sleeved card and makes it hard to bend, both in transit and at the delivery stage when the package gets pushed through a mail slot.
- Tape the cardboard together so it travels as one piece. Any tape does the job; painter's tape is still the friendlier choice for whoever opens the package.
- Add the outer layer: a plain white envelope, a bubble mailer, or a box if other items are travelling too. For cards sent on their own, the bubble mailer is generally the best pick for the extra security.

What it costs to post
Australia Post's postage rates set the cost of posting. The base rate for a domestic letter has been $1.70 since 17 July 2025. A large letter, which cannot exceed 260 by 360 mm or 20 mm thick with the packaging on, posts at $5.10 up to 250 g and $8.50 up to 500 g. Weigh and measure the finished build against those limits, because the tier it lands on sets the price. Those are the letter rates; parcel and courier pricing is separate and not covered here. The numbers are not frozen either. Australia Post has proposed raising ordinary small and large letter stamp prices by 8.8 per cent from mid-2026, and the ACCC's consultation on the proposal ran until 13 March 2026.
