How to Sell Pokemon Cards in Australia: What Buyers Actually Pay

Selling Pokemon cards in Australia is not hard. Selling them for the right number is.

Selling Pokemon cards in Australia is not hard. Selling them for the right number is. The reliable read on any card is its recent confirmed sales, not the asking prices on listings, and a US figure does not translate directly, because shipping costs, currency conversion and regional supply differences all sit under an Australian price.

This guide does not rank one selling route over another or put figures on platform fees and consignment terms; it works through what buyers in Australia actually pay, the rates local stores publish, and how to price a card before you accept an offer.

Price it before you sell it

What a card is worth runs on a short list of inputs: condition, rarity, popularity, competitive playability, grading status and current demand. Reviewing recent confirmed sales is the most reliable method for landing on the number.

Keep one piece of market history in mind before trusting an old figure. Pokemon's 2020 resurgence sent card values skyrocketing and overwhelmed the grading agencies with submissions, and The Pokemon Company answered by reprinting impacted products at maximum capacity to stabilise prices. A boom-era number is not a valuation.

The number to check instead is the Australian one. CardTracker calculates a genuine market price for singles and sealed product rather than converting a US figure. The market prices pages carry it for every tracked set, built from local sold and active listing data with per-card pricing, recent movement and the cheapest live listings for each one. Check a card there before you quote a price, answer an offer or list anything. An asking price is one seller on one day; the market price is the Australian picture.

What the stores here pay

Card shops publish their buying terms, and they are worth reading before you walk in with a binder.

Ronin Games in Belconnen buys Pokemon and Magic singles through its buylist. The process runs through that list: fill it out, wait for approval, and only then bring the cards in or post them. Contact happens by email, phone or Facebook, with photos of what you are selling. Trade-ins are taken from adults with full ID, and minors need a parent or guardian with ID. Single cards from a brand-new set are not bought or traded until a week after the official release date, because new sets are too volatile. The rates: bulk cards run $0.50 cash or $0.70 store credit per 100 cards, and sealed Pokemon product is bought at 70% in cash or 80% in store credit.

Chaotic Factory publishes per-card bulk rates for Pokemon: $0.02 for commons, uncommons and rares, $0.05 for holo and reverse holo, $0.02 for celebration holos and $0.80 for TG/GG/Radiant and V/EX/GX cards, with no energy cards taken at all. Graded slabs pay $28 each for PSA 8 and above, with a $100 minimum on bulk submissions and the same minimum on single cards before postage is covered. Mail submissions are paid by bank transfer or PayID on delivery, or PayPal friends and family if preferred, with payment processed once the cards have been inspected; upfront payment is only available through PayPal goods and services, with the fees not covered. Store credit adds 15% to the payout, but only once a mail submission has arrived.

Raptor Games in Brisbane values collections against current market data and recent sales, and pays a percentage of the market price. Store credit can be worth more than the standard purchase offer. Bulk buying depends on the store's current stock and demand, and it sometimes pauses, so check before bringing a large bulk collection in.

Northern Beaches Trading Cards in Sydney values in person with immediate payment options, and no online platform fees in the deal. The store puts retail buy prices below resale pricing, because stores carry overhead and market movement risk.

Sort the bulk before you sell it

Bulk rates are where collections quietly lose money. At $0.02 a common and $0.80 a V or GX, or $0.50 to $0.70 per hundred cards, a card worth real money has no business in the bulk box.

It happens more often than you would expect. Raptor Games has taken in bulk collections the sellers believed were worth very little, only to find competitive cards worth well above bulk rates inside, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Iono and Earthen Vessel among them. The reverse happens too: sellers convinced they were holding a valuable card because it was listed online for thousands, when it had never sold for anything close to that.

So before anything is sold as bulk, pull out the holos, the V and EX cards, the graded slabs and anything played in competition, and price them on their own.

Graded cards are the easiest to price

A slab removes most of the guesswork: the condition is verified, the population data is public and comparable sales are clearer. Northern Beaches Trading Cards flags the strongest PSA 10 and BGS 10 premiums on vintage sets, Gold Stars and low-population modern alternate arts. Raptor Games buys graded cards from PSA, CGC and BGS, modern and vintage alike, including high-end and investment pieces.

Language changes the buyer pool

Raptor Games, which buys across languages, describes Japanese cards as generally the most actively traded and collected foreign-language cards in Australia, with demand for Chinese and Korean cards varying significantly depending on the specific card and set.

The first week of a new set has no single-card buyer

Ronin Games holds off buying or trading singles from new sets until a week after the official release date. If you are pulling cards from a set that just landed, the store route opens a week later. Confirmed Australian dates for every upcoming and recent set sit on the release calendar.

The marketplace route

Selling through an online marketplace puts the cards in front of a large existing audience, with the payment process, cart and delivery tracking built into the platform. A seller ratings system means a strong review history makes you more trusted and can pull in new buyers. The cost sits in the fees: marketplaces charge on your sales, and depending on volume those fees can make up a big portion of your expenses. eBay, Amazon and Etsy are among the examples.

The pricing discipline is the same as everywhere else. CardTracker monitors eBay Australia alongside the retailers, and its market price is built from local sold and active listing data rather than a converted US figure, so the number you list at can be checked against what Australian buyers are actually paying.
